Player Profile: BROOKE CALHOUN

Today we have the pleasure of profiling a top defensive specialist prospect from Tennessee. Through our interview process we discovered that on top of a strong skill set, she has a tenacious drive to succeed and always be the best player that she can be.

You will note that she has sparkling references from her coaches and team mates exemplifying the impression that she has made upon those individuals. Brooke has yet to hit her ceiling as a player and is always looking to improve her skills. She will be an asset to any team and a joy to coach. We hope you enjoy her profile.

SFVR: Why do you want to play Volleyball Collegiately?
CALHOUN: First and foremost I want to get an education. That is very important to me. Volleyball is a sport that I love and I enjoy playing, so why not keep playing while I get my college education! If college coaches feel that I have the ability to play at the next level then I want accept that challenge and give it 100%. However If something happens and I can’t play while I attend college then I would be looking for pick up games or teams at the YMCA to play for just because I love playing it. So no matter what happens I am going to keep playing. I would just like to challenge myself to compete at the college level.

SFVR: What Position do you think you would excell at the next level?
CALHOUN: Defensive Specialist and or Libero! That’s the part of the game I enjoy the most and I have focused my skills at. When I was younger I had a former college DS coach and teach me all the finer points about that position and from that time on I have loved playing defense. I LOVE making a good pass or hitting the floor to make a dig. I can play and have played setter in the past but without a doubt my future is as DS/ Libero.

SFVR: What are your expectations for your Junior year of High School?
CALHOUN:I want to HELP lead my team to the State tournament. My school has never played at the state level and we got so close my freshmen year by making it to sub-state. So my goal is to be a good caption and help lead us to state. Because we are a small school and we have a small team I have to play OH which is not my best position. But I will give it my best and do whatever I can to help us win.

SFVR: What are you looking to do to become a better player?
CALHOUN: I have plans to work out with a trainer three days a week once school ball ends and until club ball starts. My goal is to become faster and a little stronger. Our club just joined up with a former volleyball trainer from up north and I have meet with her about what all we can do to get myself better before my senior year. Also my club team has very high expectations for this coming season so I want to be in the best shape I can be for that as well. I would also like to find some camps that focus on Defense that I could attend and receive more coaching.

SFVR: Tell us about your love for the game and your desire to become a better player.
CALHOUN: I am extremely competitive and want to be the best player I can be. I love to practice and learn more about the game. I enjoy playing for coaches who take it very serious and want to teach you the right way to play. I also enjoy playing against the best teams as playing against the best makes you better. Volleyball was the sport that just clicked for me back when I was trying different sports, so I just fell in love with it. I could play everyday and it’s hard to find me without a ball close to me.

SFVR: What does the word Coachable mean to you?
CALHOUN: That you are a player who listens to their coach and does exactly what they ask you to do. A player who can take coaching and then put it to use out on the court.

She is versatile as a hitter, a setter, and a libero. Her strongest of the three is a defensive specialist. Brooke is quick and is great at reading the hitters. She is a player that every coach loves to have because of her work ethic and great attitude.“

Sarah Lail Head Coach 15-1 Cho Cho City Volleyball Club “Heart, drive, determination, and desire, are just a few words that come to mind when talking about Brooke Calhoun. Brooke’s dedication to continuous improvement along with her positive attitude has strengthened her game and made her into a defensive force. Brooke’s “nothing hits the floor on my side” attitude is something a coach and her teammates can count on when she is on the court. PLAYER PROFILE: ALEXANDRA WALEWSKI

In a time that so many players are specialist it is refreshing to see a player that can do many things. Alex is such a player in that she has strong skill sets and is gifted enough to play anywhere around the court. She is strong and tenacious to be a top Libero at the next level. She is also a top OH with over 253 Kills.

With the ability of Div. I Schools to only offer 12 scholarships on their teams, the need to have talented players that can excel at different positions is very important. We are strong believers that Alexandra is such a player. We hope you enjoy reading her profile as much as we have enjoyed preparing it.

SFVR: When did you first play Volleyball and what attracted you to the sport?
A. Walewski: I was interested in playing volleyball coming out of middle school even though i had never played before. I have always been interested in sports and had played basketball, but i wanted to give volleyball a try. I attended summer conditioning and my first volleyball camp at Sunset before starting high school. I had a lot to learn during my J.V. season, but really progressed once i started playing club.

SFVR: Tell us about your love for the game and your desire to become a better player?
A. Walewski: There is nothing I look forward to more than an intense match where everything is on the line and I can deliver for my team. I'm always striving to improve my skills and become a better mental player. Playing year round since I first started playing as a freshman has definitely helped me. I have enjoyed the close bonds I have formed on my school and club teams.

SFVR: Why do you want to play Volleyball at the next level?
A. Walewski: I would like to continue playing competitively at a higher level. I have a Passion for the game, especially since I didn't start playing until high school. I have grown as a player and want to continue evolving and competing at the college level.

SFVR: What Does the word Coachable mean to you?
A. Walewski: It means when a player is able to listen to what a coach tells them and apply it to their play in order to improve their game and become a better mental and physical player.

SFVR: List and Rank your favorite positions and tell us a little bit on why you like these positions the most.
A. Walewski: I would have to say my favorite position is a tie between outisde hitter and libero. I love being that person who finises the play with a strong kill that gives my team momentum during the game. However, I have learned to read and be a very strong passer and defensive player. I enjoy the challenge of digging up the strongest hitters on the opposing team. In addition, although its not my first choice, I am capable of being a setter, which I have learned is a lot harder than it looks, but it is another fun position to play because you run your offense the way you want.

SFVR: What do you intend on doing during the summer to become a better player?
A.Walewski: This summer I plan to workout and train to reach my fullest potential. I will still be playing with my club team (South Florida Flyers) in the beginning of the summer until AAU Nationals in June, and hopefully I will be able to attend a high performance training camp.

PLAYER PROFILE: KRISTIN WALEWSKI - S/DS

Since last year we kept hearing about an incredible setter that played in Dade County for Ferguson High School. Everyone kept telling us that you have to see this girl play. Well, we did go see her play for Ferguson during her sophomore season. We were amazed by the many things that we saw from this player. After watching one match the first thing that stood out was her quickness in getting to the ball. She always seemed to be in perfect position and knew exactly what she wanted to do with the ball which brings out her second trait: Intelligence.

After seeing her in other matches we realized that she was a special player not only in our community but has the ability, smarts and the heart to be a key player for a University. Every time I see her play I have to remind myself that she is only 5'3" because she plays so big and strong (look at her measured reaches below). When you look at her statistics they jump out at you and tell the National Volleyball Community that a special player exists here. That is why it is with great pleasure that we introduce Kristin Walewski to all of you that have not had the pleasure of getting to know this outstanding player.

SFVR: Tell us about your love for the game and your desire to become a better player?
K. Walewski: Even though I didn't start playing until high school, I immediately had a passion for the game and have been playing year round since. I've developed awareness on the court and understanding of the game by playing for my school team as well as several clubs. I live for playing in the big games where there's a nonstop adrenaline rush and I can perform at my best for the team.

SFVR: Will you be able to bottle that adrenaline rush for the next level?
K. Walewski: In all actuality, I'm always pumped up for every game; big or small. You always have to have your A-Game because any team can beat you when your not ready to play.

SFVR: What other sports or activities do you enjoy?
K. Walewski: I like to stay active, running track, swimming and especially playing beach volleyball, which I feel has also helped my quickness on the court.

SFVR: Why do you want to play Volleyball Collegiately?
K. Walewski: I want to be at the top level and show everyone that I am capable of being a major contributor to a teams success.

SFVR: What does the word Coachable mean to you?
K. Walewski: It means someone that can take direction and apply it immediately. Also, giving 110% of yourself into what your coach asks of you and accepting that whatever the coach says is going to improve your game.

SFVR: Please describe yourself as a player?
K. Walewski: I'm very competitive and dedicated as an individual and to any team I am on.

PLAYER PROFILE: ALEXANDRA BEVERLY - 2010

We are very excited to help promote this talented volleyball player. Alexandra is everything you would want in a volleyball player and more. As a player she is a high flying enforcer that has strong skill sets and is able to play all-around the court. As a team-mate she is both friendly and supportive.

She comes from a strong volleyball family where her father and mother Jerry and Joy Beverly (who is 6'1") played and now coaches volleyball in Dade County and USAV. In addition her two younger sisters are both talented players in their own right. We recently sat down with Alexandra at one of the local Ft. Lauderdale tournaments and asked her a few questions to get to know her a little better.

SFVR: When did you get started playing Volleyball?
BEVERLY: When I was 12yrs old.

SFVR: How does playing volleyball make you feel?
BEVERLY: Volleyball is the one time of the day when I can let my inner aggressor out and just play. I enjoy watching the long hours of hard work pay off as I see continued improvement on the court.

SFVR: This club season your playing for the South Florida Flyers. It's an AAU/USAV team that is made up ALL-Dade County players. Please describe this experience?
BEVERLY: It's an amazing experience. Our team is very talented and the level of competition is amazing - we have been involved in very intense and exciting games. This experience has been incredible for me and will help me become a better player for college.

SFVR: Why do you want to play Volleyball Collectedly?
BEVERLY: There's nothing like playing the sport I love and representing my school. At the college level, the play is faster and more intense. I yearn to compete and excelle at that level.

SFVR: What does the word coachable mean to you?
BEVERLY: The ability to listen to what a coach tells me and apply it in game situations.

SFVR: What part of your game are you currently working to improve?
BEVERLY: So far, I haven't seen the ceiling on my athletic potential. I am working on every aspect of my game. My number One goal is to become a greater force at the net both offensively with more kills and a higher percentage and defensively with blocks and forcing other teams to change their shots.

PLAYER PROFILE: MONIQUE RIVERS - 2013

We are extremely happy to promote this young lady. Monique is an explosive player that can make an impact on any team both offensively and defensively. Monique plays much taller than her height might indicate, she is a high flyer and scores with authority. Obviously she has more growing to do and seeing that she is only in 8th grade chances are probable that she will become a bigger and stronger player.

The reason that we are excited to promote Monique is that she is a tenacious defender, her defensive game is very similar to UM's Cassie Loessberg. We feel that her defense is very close to what is needed at the next level and she still has four (4) more years to develop. In addition she is a good and respectable young lady she has all the traits to make her a great team-mate and friend.

We recently sat down with Monique and asked her a few questions on Volleyball and her work-out regimen.

SFVR: How would you describe yourself?
RIVERS: As a player and a person, definitely determined and concentrated on the sport, but I love to have fun once we are done winning.

SFVR: We've heard you have quite a training regimen?
RIVERS: Yep, I work-out almost everyday. I jog, use plyometric boxes, agility ladders, jump rope, medicine balls and trampoline all to help me with endurance, balance and strength.

SFVR: Are there any other sports you enjoy?
RIVERS: Yes, I love beach volleyball, soccer, swimming, badminton, football and softball.

SFVR: Do you have any favorite NCAA players?
RIVERS: Yes, Lane Cairico from the University of Miami- I love her because I think she is awesome, she plays all around like me, has great serves and she is an example of how good I want to be when I am a college freshman like her.

SFVR: Do you have any comments to the parents of young players?
RIVERS:Sure, give as much support as you can, but do not pressure your child.

SFVR: Why do you want to play volleyball collegiality?
Rivers: I want to play volleyball collegiality because I love the sport so much that I want to do it for as long as I possibly can. I want to achieve the highest level of play possible and I want to be surrounded by people who love this sport as much as I do.

SFVR: What does the word coachable mean to you?
Rivers: I think being coachable is when you listen and learn from your coach and don’t have an attitude about it because nobody wants a player who isn’t coachable. Plus what you learn, apply it; it’s not just in one ear and out the other. I think that I am coachable because I do listen to my coach and apply it when I play.

SFVR:What are a few things that you have learned from your coaches?
RIVERS: Mental toughness, physical toughness, dedication, and do everything with excitement, even if it is just shagging volleyballs.
